The F8F Bearcat was the last of Grumman's piston-engine carrier-based fighters. Two XF8F-1 prototypes were ordered in November 1943, and the first of these was flown on 21 August 1944. Grumman decided once again to utilize the most powerful engine available at the time, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp -- the same engine that had powered both their Hellcat and Tigercat designs. This time, the engine was fitted to the smallest, lightest airframe that could be built. This resulted in a highly maneuverable, fast airplane with a rate of climb 30% greater than the Hellcat.

El Grumman F8F Bearcat es un caza portaaviones monomotor estadounidense del final de la guerra. El vuelo del prototipo tuvo lugar el 21 de agosto de 1944, y el F8F ingresó a la línea en febrero de 1945 para llegar al Pacífico en mayo del mismo año. Sin embargo, el avión no participó activamente en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El corazón del F8F era el potente motor Pratt-Whitney R-2800-34W Double Wasp con 2400HP y 2800HP sobrealimentado. El Bearcat era más liviano que el Hellcat, definitivamente era más rápido que él y tenía una velocidad de ascenso mucho mejor. El F4 Corsair también estaba por delante de la competencia en muchos aspectos. Curiosamente, muchas soluciones de diseño en el F8F se tomaron de los Fw-190 alemanes capturados. Los F8F fueron utilizados en combate por Francia en la Guerra de Indochina (1946-1954). También se exportaron a Vietnam del Sur y Tailandia.
